St Columba’s College
A reconfigured space transformed into a vibrant Pre-Prep environment
St Columba’s is a Hertfordshire-based co-educational Catholic independent school for pupils aged between 4 and 18. Transitioning from an all-boys’ school in 2020, St Columba’s College continues to grow in alignment with its strategic growth plan. Having previously collaborated on their Sixth Form Centre, St Columba’s engaged TaskSpace to transform their Pre-Prep School classrooms.
The challenge
Creating individual state-of-the-art learning environments for the prep school was the challenge, setting the College apart from its competitors and providing a new dynamic environment for its pupils. Within the constraints of the existing building, maximising available space was crucial while creating a state-of-the-art learning environment.
The solution
The spaces were reconfigured in phases to create an identity for the Pre-Prep School and introducing a vibrant environment for the children to learn and play. The four spaces echo the school’s learning methodology, as seen throughout the design of the Pre-Prep School, transitioning through the Senior and Sixth Form environments.
Key design considerations
- Efficient storage: utilising every inch of space required an effective storage solution. The introduction of Learnstor provided both efficient storage tailored to each room and space optimisation.
- Zoning: designing a scheme with various levels of work and play space ensured each room was future-proofed while tailored to all areas of the EYFS criteria. Additionally, the various flexible zones provide choice for the students and staff.
- Vibrant atmosphere: creating a bright, dynamic, and adaptive space for the children was crucial. However, the natural environment was reflected in the finishes to ensure that it would not become loud or overstimulating.
Impactful outcomes
- Children interaction: the children are enabled and excited about the new space, enhancing their day-to-day learning within the bright and open spaces.
- Staff engagement: St Columba’s staff can provide their pupils with a cohesive St Columba’s experience aligned with their learning methodologies.
Conclusion
The final project enabled St Columba’s to transform their Pre-Prep School into a state-of-the-art environment for the children. TaskSpace incorporated a unique and innovative design for each room, working collaboratively with the St Columba’s staff throughout the process.
