Project Brief

This project saw the transformation of the school’s outdated Sixth Form facilities into a modern, student-focused environment. The refurbishment introduced key improvements, including new showers, upgraded study and social areas, acoustic attenuation, and the installation of 108 individual lockers. The design was carefully developed to meet both budget and timeline requirements while delivering lasting value for students.

Purpose

School leadership identified the need to modernise the Sixth Form provision as part of a wider strategy for student wellbeing and retention. The existing space was outdated, lacked basic facilities, and was not fit for purpose. An earlier design proposal was over budget, would have been disruptive to school operations, and fell short of the school’s vision. A new approach was needed - one that could deliver quality within the constraints of funding and time.

Key Outcomes

By simplifying the scope and rethinking how space was used, the project was completed over the summer holiday and within budget. The transformation has had a noticeable impact on student experience. Pupils were actively involved in the design process, fostering a sense of ownership. The addition of kitchen and shower facilities has enhanced day-to-day life, while acoustic improvements have supported more focused, productive study. The result is a welcoming and functional space that reflects the needs and ambitions of the school’s Sixth Form.
