Transforming Learning & Staff Environments at St Margaret’s School
Project Brief
The Merchant Taylors’ School partnered with TaskSpace to deliver a bold, strategic transformation of its learning environments. This wasn’t a series of isolated upgrades - it was a coordinated, phased approach to reimagining entire departments across the estate.
Spanning Pre-Prep, Prep, and Senior School, the project included major works in Science, Maths, Music, Design Technology, the Library, the central Lecture Theatre, and key leadership spaces. From modular new-builds to reconfigured interiors, each space was carefully designed to support the school’s future-facing curriculum and high academic expectations.
Purpose
The leadership team identified a clear need to align the school’s physical environment with the quality and ambition of its teaching. Spaces were not just due an upgrade - they required a redefinition and expansion. This meant improving departmental flow, functionality, and flexibility, while also enhancing accessibility across a historic site.
Rather than refreshing areas piecemeal, the school made a deliberate choice to transform whole departments - creating consistency in design, quality, and purpose. The aim was to deliver an environment that truly reflects the values of Merchant Taylors’ and supports modern teaching methods across all year groups.
Key Outcomes
The results have been wide-reaching. Entire departments now have a clear sense of identity and purpose, not to mention increased capacity. These are spaces that inspire both students and staff, designed not just to look good, but to function exceptionally.
Across the school, there is now a greater sense of cohesion and flow. Students move between departments that feel consistent in tone and standard. Teaching staff benefit from better layouts, improved AV, integrated storage, and spaces built around how they work best. Even leadership areas and Pre-Prep classrooms have been elevated - reinforcing the school’s identity from the very first touchpoint.
